My approach to therapy

I decided in undergrad that I wanted to be involved in a career that made a difference in people's lives.  I think that came from always being an empathic person. I remember as a child feeling empathy towards my siblings if we got into a fight. I remember not wanting to hurt their feelings or make them upset.  This lead me to decide that being a therapist would be a great fit.

I want you to know a bit about my approach and how I see therapy.  I work from a  collaborative perspective, believing that developing rapport and trust is most helpful in clients achieving their goals. My style and approach includes warmth, sensitivity and humor. I believe laughing can be healing and it changes what messages are being sent to your brain. That's why you might find yourself with a big belly laugh in session. I also find the importance of challenging people helps them get unstuck. This makes for a great balance to have as a therapist.

I think that people want to be understood and heard, and this helps in the change process.  Healing starts with courage and wisdom, and coming to therapy is a courageous step. Each person wants to be treated as an individual and I do my best to tailor treatment to fit your needs. I also believe that therapy works best when it engages the whole person, body, mind, emotions and spirit to assist in reaching the best outcome. That is why I incorporate a lot of mindful practice into my session.

Work Experience

The mental health field has always been a passion for me. This started in undergrad when I volunteered for a local suicide hotline. I learned so much from that experience I wanted to further my education and work experience to continue to help people.

I started my career after undergrad by working at a residential treatment facility for adults with severe and persistent mental health. I went on to help the same population in vocational settings as well has case management.

I continued my education and received my Masters degree in Counseling and found my calling as a therapist. I went to work at a clinic, which served women whom were survivors of domestic violence and I also served women whom had chemical dependency. I was a therapist and clinical supervisor. From that experience I found that Trauma work and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy were good fits for me.

When I moved to the next clinic I decided to get certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I also was then trained in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). I have continued to do DBT. I was also part of a Acceptance and Commitment intensive outpatient  team along with individual work, with clients, in this modality.
